FI8910W on 5GHz a/n?

Postby InSecurity » Wed Jun 27, 2012 5:28 pm

Will these cameras work on this network? They say they are "N" but in the specs I only see B/G

Pls check if your camera is 'VN' or 'FR',FR supports b/g/n which is new,VN does not supports n only.
There is a sticker on the bottom of the camera starting with 'VN****' or 'FR****'.

Thanks! I checked the boxes and the boxes say B/G/N so that means they should work on 5GHz, correct?
Is there any advantage to using them on 5GHz other than maybe bandwidth availability/reduction of traffic on the 5GHz spectrum?

Here's the odd thing. When I scan the wireless network my 5G N does not show up. My router is set to broadcast and my other devices see it, but nothing found in the camera scan. It sees my 2.4 and my guest 2.4, but not my 5...?

I think if you re-read what was said, was to look at the sticker on the bottom of the camera, not the box the camera came in.

Understood, but it would be false product representation if the product in the box was not what's labeled on the outside of the box :mrgreen:

Mine are FR4020A2 and should be capable 8-)

In that case, maybe you can verify this?

Some WiFi nomenclature:

802.11b = 2.4GHz band

802.11g = 2.4GHz band (and is faster than and backwards compatible with 802.11b - 802.11g implies 802.11bg)

802.11a = 5GHz band and is distinct from and incompatible with 2.4GHz equipment.

802.11ab or 802.11abg equipment supports both the 2.4GHz and the 5GHz bands.

The n designation does not specify a band but instead extends the 802.11 standads to support Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) antennas for a further performance increase. So:

802.11bgn (or just bgn) is still the 2.4GHz band.

802.11an (or just an) is still the 5GHz band.

802.11abgn (or just abgn) indicates support for MIMO on both bands.

Version 1 of the FI8910W supports 802.11bg.
Version 2 of the FI8910W supports 802.11bgn.

NO version of the FI8910W supports 802.11a or 802.11an (the 5GHz band). This camera will not work on your 5GHz WiFi network. The product specifications and marketing litrature for this camera are accurate regarding WiFi support and do not in any way imply 5GHz support.

Hope this clears it all up.

Yes, this is clear, at least with me. That all said, the larger question is...

Do the new "N" cameras, support "N" features?

Example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11n-2009

Also, please see these:

Do any Foscam cameras support 5GHz wireless?

No and this is likely due to the limited range so it doesn't make sense to use (in china). Of course this is based on crap 5ghz routers. If you want foscam plus reliable pull cables. I for one will dump foscam for another vendor who has responsive tech support and better wifi chips. Don you are great but you can't keep backing these guys up when the product obviously has some serious shortcomings.
