  1. Decent Cams Review by RSM61
    Price
    Quality

I have 4 of these 8904's and so far, no problems. I've had them for around a year or so. They've been outside in extreme heat and cold (from about 7F to 95F) with no loss of picture or shutdowns. As in my review of the 8909na, I only have one complaint; you can't turn off the ir lights. I have one Camera inside my house looking through a window to the outside. At night, the ir's come on and the resulting reflection destroys the picture. I tried to mount an 8910 in that location but it just wouldn't work. So I took the Camera apart and unplugged the ir lights from the circuit board. That took care of the problem and the camera works just fine. The street light out front provides more than enough light for a clear picture. I know this probably voided the warranty, but as cheap as these cameras are, that didn't seem to be a problem for me. I would like to see Foscam add the ir on/off feature to the entire line. An electronic switch can't possibly cost that much to add to a camera, and if they already have it in some of the PT and PTZ models transferring it over should be a cinch. One more thing; Like some of the other reviewers have stated, the mounting bracket is very basic and doesn't like to stay put. I've had to redrill some of the holes and bought stainless steel screws to put in mine so I could torque them down with an allen wrench. Even the best Camera is useless if it's just flopping around on a stick! (Posted on 7/12/13)

  2. Mounting Bracket too short Review by Ed
    Price
    Quality

If you are mounting this on a wall and the viewing direction is along the wall, you need to get a longer bracket, or build out a mounting surface away from the wall or possibly the 30 degree lens. If you mount it on a verticlal wall and the camera is looking in the direction the wall runs, half of the image is the wall it's mounted on and in IR mode the brightness from the wall washes out the image. I have two of these. One at my front door (wired) and one on my drive way (wireless). I've had them both outside since I bought them in 2011. I'm in Chicago and it gets to -20 and then 105F with lots of humidity. I have had no issues with these cameras at all. I never even need to reset them. They have great picture quality. The only issue I have found is that greens are not green, they are brown for some reason. My brother just bought one and his greens are green. Kinda strange. (Posted on 4/8/13)

  4. Great Camera Review by Echotech

I have a couple of these, and after 2 years I have had NO problems with either. We see temps as low as -8 degrees yet the camera works fine. I have found when helping others with these cameras, most of the problems people are reporting come down to the router. Set a static ip address for the camera and most problems are solved. Picture quality is not great, but it doesn't cost $600 either. For the money this is a great camera. (Posted on 2/24/13)

It worked fine outside until it got really cold, like it does in winter in a lot of places. When it got into the teens F, it quit and never came back even though it was reset every day via a timer. Internal program must have been lost and since it was remote by 1300 miles, i couldn't reprogram it. I returned it. Foscam gave me no problems about it. Very good service. (Posted on 7/28/12)

When the camera works, it's great but unfortunately my first camera got stuck in IR mode right out of the box. I sent it back and the second camera had the same problem. had 2 of these for couple years now. for the price they are good cameras. they dont always reconnect to wireless when the router reboots. cant schedule a reboot of the camera, and the picture quality isnt the greatest. the mounting brackets aren't either. but overall well worth the money. 13. Good camera, wide angle Review by Nate Monster
    Quality
    Price

I've used different types of cameras for security in the past, but most of them have very narrow viewing angles, making it hard to watch a large area with one camera. This camera, however, has a wider viewing angle than most and makes it easy to watch a large area without having to move it too far back.

This camera can be setup with a wired wireless connection. Here was my experience with both:
    (I'm using Windows 7)

    Wired Connection:
This was very easy and quick. I simply took it out of the box, plugged it into the router with the supplied network cable and installed the software on my computer. The software recognized the camera right away, but you don't have to use the software if you just go directly to the camera within your network, i.e. [...]. Once you access the camera within your network, you can view it right away and setup a wireless connection, your mail, ftp upload, and adjust other settings. If you plan to use the wireless connection you will want to enter your wirelsss connection info while you're directly connected to it here.

    Wireless Connection:
This is fairly easy once you directly connect the camera to your router and open it's settings. I simply had to supply my wireless SSID (and login/password/encryption type if used) and save it. Then I tunred off the camera, unplugged it from the router, and turned it back on after waiting about 30 seconds. From that point it was connected through the wireless connection instead of the wired connection.

Accessing the camera from outside your home network:
When you access the camera from within your home network, it's simple and easy. But when you go on a trip and you want to view your camera from outside your home network, you have to set some extra things up. This was a little trickier to do, since you will need to be able to open your router settings and adjust them. Basically you need to tell your router to allow outside connections to your camera. In short, I had to allow connections to the camera by forwarding a certain port number from within my router to my camera. Once I did that I could simply type in my router's IP address from anywhere and I could access the camera. If you don't know how to do this, your ISP tech support can probably walk you through it on the phone. Here's how I did this:
    (I have a linksys router)
    1) I opened up my router settings by going to: [...]
    2) I located the Port Range Forward menu (under Applications and Gaming)
    3) I entered the following into the first line:
    -Start=80
    -End=80
    -Protocol=Both
-Ip Address=192.168.1.102 (your camera might have a different last number here, you can see it in your address bar when you are accessing your camera)
-Checked the Enable box and hit the Save Settings button
Your mileage may vary but once I did this I could access my camera by entering my computer's IP address into a browser from any location.

    Motion Detection / Alarm:
The motion alarm works well, but you will need to adjust it's sensitivity settings for your own needs. You can set it to email you a screen capture when it detects movement and/or upload the screen captures via ftp.

The camera performs well and this model has a wider viewing angle, allowing you to view more area without having to move the camera back. I was looking for a camera like this since most I had tried had very narrow viewing angles.

I gave this camera 4 stars because the instructions were not the greatest. If you don't have experience with IP devices or this kind of thing you might not understand what the instructions are telling you sometimes.

Overall it was an easy setup, no different than setting up any other wireless device.
I will be buying a couple more of these to cover the rest of the areas around my house. (Posted on 7/3/11)

  14. Good Wireless Camera - Web UI Needs Work Review by Pete
    Price
    Quality

    Pros:
-Can login and view live video from ipod/iphone/ipad when logging in thru server push/firefox mode (very useful - no apps needed, just logon).
    -Very good low light performance.
-Resolution is very good for a wireless security camera.

    Cons:
-Personally I think the Web interface is ugly and limited.
-Tricky to get connected wirelessly, but once connected works VERY well.
    -Instructions could be better written.
-Mounting bracket is a bit cheap.
-Lens angle is a bit tight - should make it into a wider angle (apparently the lens can be upgraded) (Posted on 7/3/11)

  15. Good camera Review by Max Dunn
    Price
    Quality

Camera is fairly easy to setup and get things going with. I'm a computer technician so I didn't really need to use any of their software. I currently use Blue Iris to monitor, motion detect, and capture video and it all works well. The video quality is 640x480 at around 5fps, a little grainy, but in focus and you can usually make things out with no issue. If you've got a webcam, you've seen this video quality.

The camera in good quality, tough (dropped it once onto concrete with no ill effects), takes a nice clear picture, adjusts fairly well to changes in light. The place my camera sits get's heavy sunlight and there's a security light that is within 6" of the camera as well. The camera handles it all. The mounting stand it comes with... not my favorite. Two thumb-screw tightened ball joints and the whole things required lots of plier action to get it how I wanted it. Summary: A good purchase for low end security (Posted on 7/3/11)

  16. Better than expected Review by Nads
    Quality
    Price

I read through the majority of the reviews on this camera. There certainly are mixed reviews on quality and functionality. I decided to get one of these and test it out for myself. I also had to actually read through all the instructions for setup. I highly recommend spending some time on youtube watching the setup videos. I've had this camera now for several weeks and tweaked every possible setting to get a good feel of the real capabilities. My conclusion, the camera works well for a $100 IR camera.

Comparing most of the reviews, I have a few things to comment on with regard to most of the negative comments about this camera. The web interface does need work. It's a bit glitchy and I'd like it do have a few other features, but everything seems to do exactly what I need it to do. The night vision is as good as any IR camera out there at this price point. I've seen complaints about the quality of the IR with regard to distance and degree angle. The colors are a bit off because of the IR filter. It's a $100 camera. For what I paid for it, I love it. I've installed $500 cameras on jobs. Those camera were certainly better in quality, and performance. However, this camera has all the same features. In my opinion, it's well worth it. Set your expectations appropriately. Again, it's a $100 camera. Don't expect $500 performance.

I'll be installing 5 more. (Posted on 7/3/11)

  17. Pretty good Review by Lacey
    Quality
    Price

I ultimately am happy with this camera. I would like the color to be a little better but I got what I paid for, so I really can't complain too much. I purchased this because I was tired of our vehicles being broken into, so the motion detection was a must for me. For right now the thing goes off for almost every car that drives by but not really for people walking, even in my driveway. I need to change where it is mounted and see if that helps, I think the main focal point of the camera needs to be centered better on my property.
The biggest issue I have had with this whole thing is the lack of options for the email accounts you can use to go with the motion detection alerts. I use gmail and that is not supported by Foscam's firmware. The only free accounts they recognize are gmx or yahoo (based on my lengthy research and use of the Foscam forum) and gmx is a HUGE pain!! This isn't all that bad, just annoying really. This and the motion detection business are the reason for the 4 stars. If these things were better I wouldn't hesitate to give it 5 stars!
All in all I am happy with the camera. I know I could have found one that is a much higher quality but its just fine and the price is really fair. (Posted on 7/3/11)

  21. Great Camera for the Price.... Review by Brian
    Price
    Quality

First off, this is a great camera of the money. I have had it running wirelessly for a couple weeks now and I have always been able to access it both locally and over the internet (via my iPhone). There are some issues during the day with some slightly washed out areas on the sides, but we're talking about a $100 camera here, so it's certainly not going to be anywhere near perfect. It does what we need it for (viewing the main entry door to our house) and does it well.

The reason I gave it only four stars is that, even though it's advertised as coming the 3.6mm lens, I actually received the 6mm version. This is not a huge deal for me as I am pretty handy with electronics, but it very well mat be a deal-breaker for someone less electrically inclined. My solution was to just buy a replacement lens - I found a genuine Foscam 3.6mm lens for less than $10 shipped on eBay. I'm not sure how far I would've gotten in trying to return the camera and getting the correct one, but to me, the $10 was worth not having to deal with that hassle. Besides, I now have a spare 6mm lens in case I ever want to use the camera in a place that a narrow lens is more suited. (Posted on 7/3/11)

  22. Good little camera Review by Jeff McClain
    Price
    Quality

    Pros:
Good picture, lots of options on settings and pretty easy to setup (has web based ability to tie in up to 9 pictures through one IP).

    Cons:
Loses connection sometimes if you swamp out the speed (that may be my network, not the camera?) I wish they were MPG4.

I like this 67' View angle one better than the 22' narrow angle camera. (Posted on 7/3/11)

I have 2 of these cameras. They work fine with good day and night video. They are NOT $500 cameras so don't expect perfection.
Yes the colors are off in daylight due to infrared and no True day/night filter. Do some research before you buy and
you won't be expecting more than you can get for this price.

The Foscam produces a crisp picture, but color is way off. If you use it outdoors, be sure to set it for thata where it says 50hz. Not very intuitive and software comes on small disc that a Mac cannot use. (Posted on 7/3/11)

  26. Good Camera Review by RS Service Co
    Quality
    Price

I have had 6 of these cameras since December 2010 and have just ordered 2 more today. I use them to view areas around my home, shop and orchards. I would have given them 5 stars except for these following issues which were not too important to my use: They give a very clear picture both day and night but at night you have to switch from the outdoor setting to 60HZ to get a picture with the area very well lit. The IR is OK indoors but it is useless outdoors for open area viewing, I guess because there is nothing there to reflect the IR. The color is not as good as it should be days and bad at night, but again, the picture is very clear and the field of view is great...both matters of importance to my usage.
I also have 2 of the P&T cameras used inside my shop and pool area of the house. The field of view is only OK with them but very clear. I give them a 4 star also but I have had to get them replaced several times because they simply quit functioning completely. I was not very pleased in the return/replacement ordeal via AMAZON but I did manage to accomplish it...and it did cost me the shipping in both directions. (Posted on 7/3/11)

  28. Good inexpensive camera Review by David
    Price
    Quality

I bought 1 of these and an FI8905W and the first weekend in use we have felony burglary charges against a criminal trespasser.

If possible, don't use the PoE that are an option. The cameras are not stable using it even at short distances (30-40'). The connection seems like it could be tighter.

Running the 2 cameras over wireless with the power brick in testing over the weekend and had good quality video and motion detection.

The angle on the FI8904 is better than the FI8905 for short distances as you capture more area. I am getting roughly 50' of detection with this camera, 70' with the FI8905. Both are mounted on the 2nd floor facing at about a 45 degree angle and work great.

Haven't tested the IR lighting at night yet, I have several 500w quartz halogens lighting up the area where they are installed. (Posted on 5/2/11)
